Meta had planned to expand its AI technology, including the Meta AI assistant and the large language model known as Llama, to Europe. However, these plans have been put on hold following requests from regulators.
Regulatory Concerns
The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), acting on behalf of the European Data Protection Authorities, has asked Meta to postpone its plan to train large language models using public content shared by adults on Facebook and Instagram. The main concerns revolve around privacy and transparency. The DPC and other regulatory bodies have raised questions about whether Meta’s approach complies with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
