Maezawa first unveiled the dearMoon project in September 2018, with the ambitious goal of flying himself and eight selected artists around the moon aboard SpaceX’s Starship (then known as BFR, or Big Falcon Rocket).

The project aims to bring a diverse group of creative minds together for a transformative journey, with the ultimate goal of inspiring the world through their artistic perspectives and experiences. Maezawa, a Japanese billionaire and art collector, will be covering the cost of the mission, which is expected to take place in 2023 at the earliest.

The Selection Process

Maezawa is looking for a diverse group of eight to twelve individuals from various creative fields, including painters, sculptors, photographers, musicians, film directors, and fashion designers. The selection process is expected to be highly competitive, and Maezawa has emphasized that he is seeking people who can “push the boundaries of creativity.”

Eligibility and Application

To be eligible for the dearMoon project, applicants must be prepared to dedicate at least 6 to 8 months of their time to the mission, which will include training, preparation, and the actual space flight. The application process is open to anyone from around the world, and interested individuals can apply through the project’s website.

The Mission and its Significance

The dearMoon mission will be a historic event, not only for the passengers but also for the entire space exploration community. It will be the first private lunar mission since the Apollo program, and the first to send a diverse group of artists into space.

Artistic Inspiration and Legacy

Maezawa believes that the experience of traveling to the moon will inspire the selected artists to create truly unique and transformative works of art, which will in turn inspire and captivate audiences around the world. The mission aims to leave a lasting legacy, showcasing the power of art and its ability to connect people across borders and cultures.
