Apple’s Initial Plans: Phil Schiller’s Expected Role at OpenAI
Initially, it was reported that Apple would gain an observer position on OpenAI’s board of directors, with Phil Schiller, Apple’s former head of marketing and current App Store chief, set to represent Apple in this role. This position would have allowed Schiller to attend board meetings but not grant him voting rights or other decision-making powers. This arrangement was part of a deal between Apple and OpenAI to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Apple’s products, including iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.
However, just days after these reports, it was announced that Apple would not take up the observer role on OpenAI’s board. This decision appears to be driven by antitrust concerns, as regulators in both the US and Europe are scrutinizing investments by large tech companies in AI startups. Microsoft, which is OpenAI’s major shareholder, has also given up its observer seat on the board due to similar regulatory scrutiny.
Instead of having an observer role, OpenAI will host regular meetings with key strategic partners, including Apple and Microsoft, to keep them informed and engaged. These meetings will be led by OpenAI’s Chief Financial Officer, Sarah Friar. This approach aims to provide similar benefits without the regulatory risks associated with board observer roles.
