As of September 16, 2024, OpenAI’s Safety and Security Committee, established in May, will transition into an independent oversight board. This new board will be led by Zico Kolter, the director of the machine learning division at Carnegie Mellon University. Other notable members include Adam D’Angelo, a board member of OpenAI and co-founder of Quora; Paul Nakasone, a former NSA chief and board member; and Nicole Seligman, who previously served as executive vice president at Sony.

Oversight and Authority

The board, in conjunction with the full OpenAI board, will have the authority to oversee model launches and can postpone releases until any safety issues are resolved. This move is aimed at addressing concerns about the company’s rapid expansion and its impact on safety operations.
