Three Mile Island, located on the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was the site of the worst commercial nuclear power plant accident in U.S. history. On March 28, 1979, the Unit 2 reactor core partially melted down due to equipment malfunctions and human operator errors, leading to a loss of coolant and the release of radioactive gases and iodine into the environment. Although no deaths or injuries were directly linked to the incident, the accident had a profound impact on the nuclear industry. Unit 2 has been sealed and is in the process of being decommissioned, while Unit 1, which was shut down in 2019 due to economic reasons, is now slated for reopening.
