The new applied research laboratory is situated in the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Tech Cooperation Zone, a collaboration area established by the Chinese government to enhance tech partnerships between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The facility spans 20,000 square meters (approximately 215,000 square feet) in its initial phase and is set to become Apple’s research and development hub in the Greater Bay Area, which includes Hong Kong, Macau, and nine cities in Guangdong province.

Product Capabilities and Challenges

Announced in March, the lab is designed to boost Apple’s testing and research capabilities for its major products, including the iPhone, iPad, and the upcoming Vision Pro mixed-reality headset. The facility aims to enhance the reliability and performance of these products, addressing some of the challenges Apple has faced in the competitive Chinese market.
