In June, Apple rejected UTM SE citing that it violated guideline 4.7 of the App Review Guidelines, which previously only allowed emulators of retro game consoles. The App Store Review Board stated that “PC is not a console,” despite the app’s capability to run retro Windows and DOS games.
Following significant backlash and potential regulatory pressure, Apple has reconsidered and approved UTM SE. The app is now available for free on the App Store and will also be available through the AltStore in the European Union. This approval comes after Apple updated its App Store Guidelines in August to explicitly permit PC emulator apps, aligning with the recent relaxation of rules for retro game emulators.
