Klamath River Dams Demolished in Unprecedented Restoration Project

By Byte Staff Climate

The Klamath River dam removals are among the largest in the nation’s history, with four dams slated for removal, including J.C. Boyle, Copco No. 1, Copco No. 2, and Iron Gate. These dams, built between 1908 and 1962, have blocked salmon and steelhead trout from reaching vital habitat, encroached on Indigenous culture, and harmed water quality for people and wildlife.

Benefits of Dam Removal

The removal of these dams will not only improve water quality and restore fish populations but also save PacifiCorp customers more than $100 million compared to upgrading the dams to modern standards.
