The U.S. AI Safety Institute, part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) within the Department of Commerce, will receive access to OpenAI’s new models prior to and following their public release. This agreement is part of a broader effort to advance the science of AI safety and mitigate potential risks associated with advanced AI systems.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding, OpenAI and the U.S. AI Safety Institute will engage in collaborative research to evaluate the capabilities and safety risks of these models. The institute will also provide feedback on potential safety improvements to OpenAI’s models, working closely with its partners at the U.K. AI Safety Institute.
