World’s First Autonomous Robot Dentist Successfully Performs Dental Procedure

By Byte Staff Robotics

The procedure was conducted by Perceptive, a Boston-based company, using an AI-controlled robotic system. This system specializes in preparing teeth for dental crowns, a process that typically requires about 2 hours and is often split into two separate visits when performed by human dentists. In contrast, the robotic system completed the task in approximately 15 minutes.

Robotic System Technology

The robotic system employs advanced imaging technology, including a handheld 3D volumetric scanner that utilizes optical coherence tomography (OCT) to create detailed 3D models of the patient’s mouth, including teeth, gums, and nerves beneath the tooth surface. This technology eliminates the need for X-ray radiation and achieves a high accuracy rate of around 90% in detecting cavities.

The robot’s precision is highlighted by its ability to drill with an accuracy of 100 microns, equivalent to the thickness of a human hair. This level of precision minimizes risks and reduces human error, significantly enhancing the outcome of the procedure.
